The location of the U.S. embassy has changed five times throughout the US diplomatic relations with Cambodia. The State Department recognized Cambodia in 1950 and set up their representative office at Le Royal Hotel in the same year. After Cambodia got independence, the first U.S. Embassy opened in a villa on the corner of Sisowath Yuthvong road and Oknha Hing Penh, about one kilometer from Wat Phnom. After that, it moved to a bigger space along Srok Treang Road until the diplomatic relations between the two countries were cut off in 1965.

During the US-backed Khmer Republic regime, the US Embassy was located on the corner of Norodom Boulevard and Sothearos Boulevard. Currently, this site belongs to the Fisheries Administration.

The United States reestablished diplomatic relations with Cambodia in 1992. The embassy was located behind ‘8 March Kindergarten’ along Street 240. However, the embassy location changed once more to a former sports club called Le Cercle Sportif, near historic Wat Phnom.
