In recent years, Angkor Wat – the world heritage site – has played a significant role in the growth of the tourism sector and the economy of the country. It is also a source of fame for Cambodia. However, during the Khmer Rouge regime, which is notorious for mass killings and destroying all forms of art and culture, Angkor Wat had not only been protected properly but was also the most important place visited by foreign delegations after meetings with Khmer Rouge high officials in Phnom Penh.
